Our client is an innovative, fast-growing biotechnology company focused on developing sustainable, next-generation protein solutions. With a global footprint and a strong emphasis on research and process development, the organization is scaling its operations in Atlantic Canada and building out pilot and demonstration capabilities.

This is a unique opportunity to join a high-impact, early-stage team where you will play a critical role in advancing fermentation technology from lab to pilot scale and beyond.

Position Overview

The Fermentation Lead will be responsible for scaling microbial fermentation processes from benchtop through pilot and demonstration stages, establishing the technical foundation for future commercial production.

This role is ideal for a hands-on, systems-oriented engineer or scientist who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and enjoys bridging R&D with real-world manufacturing.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement SOPs for fermentation operations (aseptic processes, CIP/SIP, seed trains)
  • Define and optimize process parameters (DO, pH, temperature, feeding strategies)
  • Establish upstream-to-downstream handoff criteria (harvest timing, biomass quality, sampling)
  • Support regulatory documentation (batch records, validation protocols, compliance requirements)
  • Coordinate technology transfer activities with external partners (e.g., CDMOs, pilot facilities)
  • Collaborate on pilot plant strategy and future commercial manufacturing plans
  • Contribute to grant applications and technical documentation
  • Support lab setup, including systems, inventory, and safety protocols
  • Mentor and support junior team members as the team grows

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Biochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Microbiology, or related field
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in microbial fermentation
  • Experience working with pilot-scale bioreactors (1000L+ preferred)
  • Strong understanding of process control and scale-up principles
  • Proven experience developing SOPs and technical documentation
  • Experience working with external partners (CDMOs, research organizations, pilot facilities)
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills
  • Excellent communication and project management abilities
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada

Preferred Experience

  • Microalgae or alternative protein fermentation
  • Food or ingredient production processes
  • Technology transfer and pilot plant environments
  • Grant writing or participation in funded R&D programs

Work Environment

  • Primarily on-site in Charlottetown, PEI
  • Work conducted across lab, pilot, and partner facilities
  • Some schedule flexibility required (including occasional evenings/weekends)
