About the Opportunity

Our client, a well-established and growing food manufacturing organization in Atlantic Canada, is seeking an experienced Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join its executive leadership team. This is an outstanding opportunity for a strategic financial leader who enjoys working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment and contributing to the long-term success of a dynamic organization.

Reporting directly to the President, the CFO serves as a trusted advisor to the executive team and Board of Directors, providing strategic financial leadership while overseeing all aspects of the company's financial operations.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

  • Partner with senior leadership to develop and execute the organization's financial strategy.
  • Provide financial guidance to support operational excellence, business growth, and long-term planning.
  • Advise the President, Board of Directors, and executive team on financial performance, capital investments, and strategic initiatives.
  • Develop annual budgets, forecasts, and financial objectives aligned with organizational goals.
  • Support corporate governance activities, including Board reporting and corporate records.

Financial Planning & Analysis

  • Lead budgeting, forecasting, financial modeling, and business analysis activities.
  • Prepare and present timely financial reports, including:
  • Financial statements
  • Budget-to-actual and forecast analysis
  • Weekly cash flow reporting
  • Analyze financial performance, identify trends, and provide recommendations that drive informed business decisions.
  • Develop and improve financial reporting systems and key performance metrics.

Accounting & Financial Operations

  • Oversee all accounting functions, ensuring the integrity of financial records and internal controls.
  • Manage:
  • General Ledger
  • Month-end and year-end close
  • Accounts Receivable
  • Financial reporting
  • Regulatory reporting
  • Ensure timely preparation of financial statements, tax filings, remittances, and other compliance requirements.
  • Drive continuous improvement of accounting systems, policies, and financial processes.

Treasury & Cash Management

  • Manage cash flow, banking relationships, investments, and financial risk.
  • Oversee weekly cash management activities, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
  • Prepare weekly cash position reports for executive leadership and the Board.
  • Evaluate financing opportunities and capital requirements.

Payroll, Benefits & Administration

  • Provide executive oversight for payroll, employee benefits, pension administration, and related financial functions.
  • Collaborate with payroll and HR teams to ensure compliance, accuracy, and timely processing.

Leadership & Team Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop the finance team.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and professional development.
  • Manage team performance, resource allocation, and succession planning.

External Relationships

  • Serve as the primary financial contact for:
  • Banks
  • Auditors
  • Financial institutions
  • Government agencies
  • External stakeholders
  • Maintain current knowledge of financial regulations, audit standards, and compliance requirements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
  • CPA designation required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive accounting and finance experience, including 5+ years in a Chief Financial Officer or equivalent senior finance leadership role within a large privately held organization.
  • Public accounting background strongly preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of:
  • GAAP
  • Financial reporting
  • Internal controls
  • Corporate governance
  • Regulatory compliance
  • External audit processes
  • Experience leading financial systems implementations and process improvements.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office skills.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, analytical, and strategic planning abilities.
  • Experience in manufacturing, food processing, or another complex operational environment is considered a strong asset.
