Position Overview
The Bioprocess Scientist will support the development and optimization of microbial fermentation processes, helping transition from bench-scale R&D to pilot-scale production.
This role is ideal for a detail-oriented, hands-on scientist who enjoys experimental work, data analysis, and working closely with cross-functional teams in a dynamic environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Execute bench-scale and small pilot-scale fermentation experiments
- Perform culture inoculation, monitoring, sampling, and data collection
- Maintain strain libraries and support culture stability and seed train activities
- Assist with process optimization, including media and cultivation conditions
- Support pilot trials through inoculum preparation and troubleshooting
- Document experimental results, batch records, and sampling plans
- Track performance metrics and maintain accurate lab records
- Collaborate with engineers and technical teams on process development
- Maintain lab operations (media prep, calibration, safety compliance)
- Support inventory management and general lab administration
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Biotechnology, Microbiology, Chemical Engineering, or related field
- 1–3 years of hands-on experience in bioprocessing or fermentation (or equivalent academic experience)
- Experience with microbial cultivation (shake flasks and/or bench-scale bioreactors)
- Strong aseptic technique and sterile handling practices
- Excellent organizational and documentation skills
- Strong communication and teamwork abilities
- Eligible to work in Canada
Preferred Experience
- Microbial fermentation or alternative protein processes
- Microalgae or similar biological systems
- Exposure to pilot-scale operations or scale-up environments
- Experience with strain maintenance and process development
Work Environment
- Primarily on-site in Charlottetown, PEI
- Work conducted in laboratory and pilot environments
- Flexible schedule required based on experiment timing
- Occasional evening/weekend work may be needed
